Teens on the Costa del Sol

Teens on the Costa del Sol

If you’re already living and renting long term on the Costa del Sol, or you’re planning to move over with a family, you may be wondering what there is to do for teenagers here and if this is a good place for them.

There are some excellent international schools in the area, which are the best choice for teens who do not speak Spanish and want to get internationally recognised qualifications. There are options to study the International Baccalaureate or the UK system to A level, so getting the qualifications shouldn’t be an issue. These schools also offer a rich programme of extra curricular activities.

Outside school, there are brilliant sports facilities, so if you are interested in football, basketball, rugby, sailing, golf, rock climbing, riding or any sport, then there are teams and clubs available and this can be a great way to integrate into the Spanish community. Also, if performing is a passion then there are lots of great performing arts and music groups to join which are excellent for teens who want to express themselves.

There are also lovely hikes and trips into the surrounding countryside organised by the town hall, where families can explore this beautiful area. During the summer months, it’s great to hang out down the beach during the day and there are big parties or ferias in every town and lots of activities for teens and people of all ages to enjoy. Check out the calendar of activities in your local town hall, there is often a lot more going on than you may realise.

An important activity for teens to make the most of their new surroundings is learning Spanish and while they might not be keen at first, it’s a great way to learn a new skill and feel settled in your environment. There are group classes, or private classes and once your teen has some confidence, you can introduce them to the language exchanges, where people get together socially to practice. You can talk to your local town hall to find out if there are any language exchanges and also look at the website Meetup which has loads of interesting things going on, including language exchanges.

Another idea for teens looking for things to do and to enrich their CV is to contact the local Costa del Sol charities and find out about volunteering opportunities. These organisations are always in desperate need of help and it can be a great way for teens to increase their skills, help the community, fill their time productively and really make a difference.

Last month, there was an interesting forum organised by Nicole King and RTV Marbella Now to get community ideas on how to improve the lives of people on the Costa del Sol. The most popular topic was teens on the Costa del Sol, as there was a lot of concern about the lack of options for this sector. Held at Laude School, the kids themselves were able to have their say. The kids and parents discussed that activities such as the cinema, ice-skating, paintballing, theme parks and water parks are widely available and teens would like to do them. However, they are expensive, so for teens and their parents the costs are too high to be affordable on a regular basis. The group plan to set up a discount card to get around this issue.

The other concern was having a safe place for the teens to hang out, and the attendees discussed creating some sort of youth club concept where kids would want to go and could be supervised. They will be speaking to owners of space in the Puerto Banus area and the Town Hall to see if this could be got off the ground, to improve the life for teens in the area.

Help HomeRentalontheWeb keep our beaches clean

One of the many great benefits of living on the Costa del Sol are the long stretches of beautiful beaches and being able to enjoy the Mediterranean whenever you want. The Costa del Sol has 161 kilometres of glorious coastline and a stroll along one of the beachfront promenades, lunch in one of the great beach restaurants and a day at the beach with the family is an essential element of life on the Costa del Sol.

To fully appreciate the diversity of the coastal areas here, we particularly recommend exploring the wide sandy beaches around Elviria, the lovely sandy bay in Cabopino and the stunning coves with crystal clear water around Nerja.

It’s getting easier each year to explore the coastal areas on foot or by bike with the extension of the coastal path. Recent additions include new stretches in Benalmadena, Marbella and Estepona, which have really improved access. The plan is to ultimately link Nerja to Manilva, a network of boardwalks, paths, bridges and cycle oaths which will stretch 190 kilometres.

We love enjoying the coastal paths and beaches along the Costa del Sol, where the sands are normally well looked after and regularly cleaned. However, you can notice that there is a huge amount of rubbish in the planet’s seas, which wash up on the beaches and are a serious threat to the ocean wildlife. This is something we want to reduce and help the area’s beaches and sea to be even better.

To help combat the problem and support important research into the amount of rubbish and plastic in our oceans, there is a global event called the International Coastal Cleanup taking place on Saturday 6th May. Our partner Novasol is organising events across many different countries and HomeRentalontheWeb are helping them to get as many people as possible to support the campaign.

If you love the Costa del Sol and are as passionate as we are about protecting the oceans and wildlife and cleaning up our beaches, please come and join us at Playa del la Malagueta, by the Paseo de Matias Prats in Malaga from 10.30am on Saturday 6th May. Volunteers will be provided with gloves, bags and a notepad to list and identify the type of waste found on the beach and it will be a great way to protect our seas and raise awareness about the growing problem of rubbish and waste polluting our beaches and the sea.

We hope to see you there, please come and say hello!

It’s February, so all thoughts turn to romance and celebrating the love of your life, but if you’re in a new country it can be hard to know what to do and where to go. Never fear, we’re here to help to make living on the Costa del Sol fantastic, so we’ve picked some top activities for families, couples and singles to help you have a great day no matter what!

This year Valentine’s falls on a Tuesday, so many places are running special romantic meal deals for the week of the 10th to the 19th of February. This includes 2 weekends, as well as a whole week, so it’s much more flexible than normal.

For the big spenders or those who want to make this year one to remember

If you’re thinking of popping the question, or you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary, how about two nights in a luxury hotel, with pampering, amazing food and stunning surroundings?

The most historic and iconic Costa del Sol hotel has to be the Marbella Club, and they are offering an amazing package including champagne buffet breakfasts, a gourmet dinner, spa treatment and unlimited golf for the Valentine’s period.  Find out more

A little further along the coast is the Kempinski Hotel Bahia, the only 5* Grande Luxe hotel in the Estepona area. They are also doing a wonderful Valentine’s package, including luxurious accommodation, a romantic 5-course dinner, champagne in your room and use of the spa and fitness centre, which would be a very special way to say I love you.

For Love birds

The Beach House is a lovely restaurant right on the beach in Elviria, with great food and a lovely atmosphere. They are holding a special Masquerade Dinner & Dance on Valentine’s Day itself, including a 5 course menu and champagne cocktail.

The Urban Villa is a stunning boutique hotel in the hills behind Marbella, with breath taking views. Growing your own on the Costa del Sol

Growing your own on the Costa del Sol

Southern Spain is a paradise for keen gardeners, with an amazing climate in which almost anything will grow! You can grow your own fruit, veg and herbs, even if you just have a window box or a terrace, but obviously you’ll have some limitations in terms of what you can have.

There’s an ever increasing interest from people around the Costa del Sol to grow their own, and so organizations and Town Halls are responding by providing allotments for the community.

Arboretum Foundation has launched a new project for Marbella, 70 more organic urban allotments which will encourage sustainable development and bring together the community. This will take the total up to 100 allotments in total, which have been snapped up by keen gardeners in the area.

In May, work began in Casares Costa to create 200 100m2 plots for residents of the area. These plots are particularly designed for retired, unemployed or low income families or individuals to help them to put food on the table.

There are similar projects running in Mijas and in addition to allotments provided by the Town Hall and community groups, it is often possible to rent small pieces of land to grow your own. Speak to your local Town Hall or community group to find out what the options are in your area. If you draw a blank, then why not speak to the owners in your community and find out if they’d be up for creating a community garden in your urbanisation. It’s a great way to bring everyone together and to produce delicious, seasonal, organic fruit and veg.

If you love gardening, tell us when you’re searching for your long term rental and we’ll try and find you a property with a garden, or land. Most villas have decent gardens, many of which have fruit trees and with the permission from the landlord you can create a small veg patch. It’s also amazing what you can grow in pots on a sunny terrace; salad leaves, tomatoes, chillies, cucumber and more can all be very productive in pots if they are well looked after.

If space is important to you, then look further inland around Istan, Ojen and Coin for properties with large plots. Please tell us when you start your search, as we may have to cast our net a little wider than normal if you want a plot to cultivate. However, if you want to make sure that the work you do doesn’t get lost when you move, then an allotment can be a great choice which can keep your long term rental search more flexible and give you more options for locations and property types.

Take a look at our Costa del Sol long term rental properties on our website, or drop us an email with your requirements and we’ll try and find you that perfect place.

Exploring the world from Malaga

Malaga-Airport-DeparturesFollowing on from last month’s post about travelling between the UK and the Costa del Sol, this month we wanted to talk about why living and working on the Costa del Sol is so great if you’re a frequent flyer to other parts of the globe, and tell you why things are getting even better!

Málaga airport offers flights to over 100 destinations in 25 countries, so it’s a brilliant place to live near if you love travel or need it for work. There are a large number of UK airports with direct and low cost flights as we’ve said, as well as over 16 destinations within Spain, but what about if you’re looking for something a little further afield?

You could fly to Bologna in Italy, which was recommended by Rick Stein as a great place for a long weekend for it’s amazing food, charm and beauty and looked amazing. Check out the programme and let us know what you think?

Or what about visiting the place where east meets west – Istanbul, to shop ‘til you drop in the huge bazaar, visit the Blue Mosque and take a boat down the Bosphorus? You can have a romantic break in Paris or Venice, or sample the delights of Salzburg or Sofia, all from Malaga airport!

We’re thrilled to see that Delta has also resumed their direct flights between Malaga and New York, after testing the route last summer.  The flights are daily and due to be running all year round, offering an amazing 2,700 weekly seats in 2016. Prices start from under 800€ return, find out more and book on the Delta Airlines website.

If you don’t see the destination you want from Malaga, check the flights from Madrid or from London, as this gives you much more flexibility and options. It can also be cheaper than a direct flight, so shop around. Remember as well, that on the Costa del Sol you’re not far from Gibraltar, Seville, Jerez and Granada airports, so make sure you check out all the options. We’d recommend Skyscanner for finding the best deals, you can find some amazing bargains if you’re flexible with when you travel!

If proximity to the airport is important to you, we’d recommend placing yourself on the train line from Malaga to Fuengirola, as this will give you the easiest route in. Renting long term in Benalmadena is a good option if you want to have everything on your doorstep, a strong international community, great schools, medical facilities and things to do.

This two bed Benalmadena apartment is an excellent choice, as it’s great value for money, in a quiet secure complex above the town itself, yet with good transport links down to the centre. The complex has a swimming pool and it is within walking distance of a 4* hotel with great facilities. From just 525€ per month as a long term rental, it would make an excellent and affordable base close to the airport for frequent flyers. Let us know if we can help you find the perfect long term rental on the Costa del Sol!

Looking forward to summer 2016

Summer 2016 MarbellaThe sun is shining and it’s starting to feel a lot like summer, so we thought it was a good time to look ahead to what’s going on this summer, as there’s loads of brilliant things being announced all the time.

There’s a packed schedule of live music events, including over 20 stellar acts at Starlite 2016 including Robert Plant, Santana, Tom Jones and Alejandro Sanz. As if that wasn’t enough, Seal is performing at the Puente Romano in July and Simply Red will be in Fuengirola in August.

The beach clubs will be opening their doors at the end of this month, with regular events starting in May and ramping up throughout June, July and August. Once the beach clubs are open, there’s always something going on!

If you’re an art lover, head to Malaga to enjoy the summer shows, which include Jackson Pollock’s Mural at the Picasso Museum.

Foodies should make a beeline for Fuengirola for the Feria de los Pueblos at the end of April, and the Malaga Gastronomy Festival from the 29th April to 5th May, not to mention Estepona’s great ham festival in August. Read more about food festivals on the Costa del Sol

Remember that the ferias begin with Marbella’s Feria in the second week in June and continue on throughout July and August, so keep your eyes peeled for your nearest one.

Don’t miss the San Juan celebrations on the evening of the 23rd June, it is a really magical experience where people light bonfires on the beach and party all night long. We recommend heading down to Sabinillas for the coast’s biggest San Juan party with bonfires like art works.

You will be the envy of all your friends living on the Costa del Sol in the summer and there’s always something going on. It’s such a treat to be able to just head to the beach or to the pool after work, enjoy sundowners at your favourite beach bar, or stroll down the promenade late into the night on one of the many balmy summer evenings.

If you’re planning to move over to the Costa del Sol before summer to enjoy all of this, then don’t delay in sorting out your long term rental property. Once the summer starts (from June onwards) then most landlords will choose to let their property short term and that will be a lot more expensive for you – a week’s holiday rental is generally the same price as a whole month long term. Please contact us for a list of good long term rentals in your preferred area before May to ensure you get a good selection, or browse our properties online. We look forward to hearing from you!

Tips for making the most of Christmas on the Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol ChristmasIt’s official – Christmas is here and we’re feeling very festive, with mince pies aplenty in the office. Malaga’s amazing lights were lit at the end of November, all the other towns followed suit at the beginning of December and everything is looking gorgeous. How’s your town looking? We’d love to see pictures!!

When you’re an expat renting on the Costa del Sol, Christmas can feel a little odd. Whilst we’re not complaining, having a sunny Christmas can make you lose that festive feeling, and not having family around can be tough. Don’t worry though, you just need to follow our handy tips and you’ll have a brilliant time.

  • Go to Malaga, marvel at the lights, stock up on Christmas presents on Calle Larios and enjoy a drink and some tapas to rest those aching feet. A visit to see the Malaga lights is a must for a perfect Christmas on the Costa del Sol and sure to get you in the mood.
  • Stock up on your Christmas favourites from a local international supermarket, or take a trip into Gibraltar. Having these goodies around you will make it feel like Christmas no matter where you are.
  • Make sure you’re warm enough – Stock up with wood if you have an open fire, or invest in an oil fuelled radiator and some lovely scented festive candles to make it really cozy and special.
  • Arrange special events – Get together with friends and arrange to have little parties at different houses, a Christmas Eve cocktail party, or a Boxing Day buffet to bring together friends who are staying makes it feel really fun.
  • Check what’s on – The Town Hall often holds events and there are theatre productions such as Swan Lake, but these do not tend to be well publicised in English, so keep your eye on the Town Hall website and posters which should be going up any time now.
  • Take full advantage of the lovely weather – Go and walk along the beach, or collect pine cones and fire wood in the hills and stunning countryside around Marbella, have a game of golf, or arrange a champagne brunch or cocktails on the beach with friends, you’re on the Costa del Sol so why not!!

If you’re feeling chilly and you haven’t found the right long term rental property where you want to spend Christmas don’t panic, we can help you find somewhere warm and comfortable, that will be a great base all year round. Please let us know as soon as possible so we can make sure you’re in and settled in time for Christmas.
